Technical and Economic Analysis of the Operation of a Cogeneration Unit Based on the DvGA-500 Gas Engine Generator Manufactured by PJSC "Dieselmash-KGU"
Current as of May 2026

EQUIPMENT

COGENERATION UNIT, WHICH INCLUDES:

  • gas engine-generator DvG1A-500 with auxiliary equipment

  • generator control panel type ShchUEA

  • oil tank with a centrifugal oil filter

  • water tank

  • starting air bottle, capacity 330 L

  • automated compressor with electric drive

  • silencer–spark arrester

  • gas supply system

  • cooling system

  • heat-recovery water heater (waste-heat heat exchanger)

  • set of spare parts, tools, and accessories (SPTA)

INITIAL DATA:

  • Total electrical output of the cogeneration unit (taking into account the power utilization factor – 0.9) – 500 kW × 0.9 = 450 kWh.

  • Electricity generation: 8,000 h × 450 kWh = 3,600.00 thousand kWh/year, where 8,000 h is the number of annual operating hours of the CHP unit.

  • Thermal output of the CHP unit – 720 kW × 0.9 = 648 kW × 0.86/1000 = 0.557 Gcal/h.

  • Heat generation: 0.557 × 8,000 = 4,464 Gcal/year.

  • Fuel – natural gas with a calorific value of 8,000 kcal/m³.

  • Gas price – UAH 7.37/Nm³ (VAT included).

  • Annual fuel consumption of the CHP unit – 150 Nm³/h × 0.9 × 8,000 = 1,080.00 thousand Nm³/year.

ANNUAL EXPENSES:

  • Annual cost of natural gas: Annual gas consumption per year: 1,080.00 thousand Nm³/year * UAH 30.00 thousand/thousand Nm³ = UAH 32,400.00 thousand incl. VAT,

  • Spare parts and maintenance costs of the CHP unit:
Average annual costs – UAH 500.00 thousand incl. VAT.

  • Cost of "Arian-Ultra Gas" oil:
    8,000 h × UAH 180 × (450 kW × 0.9 g/kW / 1000 + 500 L / 4,000 h) = UAH 764.00 thousand incl. VAT, where
    – 0.9 g/kW – average actual specific oil consumption due to burn-off,
    – UAH 180/L – cost of "Arian-Ultra Gas" oil,
    – 500 L – quantity of oil in the CHP unit,
    – 4,000 h – oil service life before replacement

  • Annual payroll of operating personnel:
    (4 persons × UAH 25 thousand × 12 months) – UAH 1,200.00 thousand.

  • Payroll deductions (22%) – UAH 264.00 thousand.

  • Annual depreciation (5%) – UAH 780.00 thousand.

  • Total annual expenses amount to:
    UAH 32,400.00 thousand + UAH 500.00 thousand + UAH 764.00 thousand + UAH 1,200.00 thousand + UAH 264.00 thousand + UAH 780.00 thousand = UAH 35,908.00 thousand.

CALCULATION OF THE ANNUAL ECONOMIC BENEFIT:

It is planned that the generated electrical energy will be used entirely for the company's own needs, which means the company will save on purchasing electricity from the market, the price of which, as of May 2026, is UAH 12.00/kWh incl. VAT.
In this case, the company will save:
3,600.00 thousand kWh × UAH 12.00/kWh = UAH 43,200.00 thousand incl. VAT

The thermal energy in the form of hot water will also be used by the company for its own needs during the heating season. In this case, the company will save the funds that would otherwise be spent on producing the same amount of thermal energy, for example, using a solid-fuel boiler.
For the calculation, we take the previous average cost of 1 Gcal of thermal energy – UAH 2,000.00/Gcal incl. VAT.
Thus, the company will save on thermal energy: 2,228.00 Gcal × UAH 2,000.00/Gcal = UAH 4,456.00 thousand incl. VAT.

Annual economic benefit from the implementation and operation of the CHP unit:
UAH 43,200.00 thousand + UAH 4,456.00 thousand – UAH 35,908.00 thousand = UAH 11,748.00 thousand incl. VAT

PAYBACK PERIOD OF THE CHP UNIT:

The estimated cost of implementing a CHP unit based on the DvGA-500 gas engine generator, including design work, construction and installation work, commissioning, and putting the equipment into operation, as of May 2026, is approximately UAH 20.00 million incl. VAT. (UAH 15.60 million – CHP unit cost + UAH 4.40 million – other works (up to 30%))

The payback period of the CHP unit is: UAH 20,000.00 thousand / UAH 11,748.00 thousand = 1.70 years

Our engine-generators have proven themselves over the years in operation in various natural and climatic conditions in more than 40 countries around the world.

FIELD OF APPLICATION

Engine-generators as a source of electrical energy are used in all branches of industry, agriculture, housing and communal services and are designed for long-term continuous operation both in autonomous mode and in parallel operation with each other or with an industrial power grid of unlimited power.

To meet the need for greater electrical power, several engine-generators are used in different power combinations, which can operate in parallel with each other, depending on fluctuations in power consumption.

The use of alternative fuels in engine-generators allows replacing the use of traditional (fossil) fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and providing a significant economic effect for the consumer during their operation.
