Under normal conditions the units run in parallel with the grid, and electricity generated in excess of the boiler house's own demand is fed into the grid. When the grid goes down, the unit switches to island mode and the boiler house continues to supply heat.

The most common mistake is buying CHP for peak load instead of base load. Peaks should be covered from the grid, and CHP should be sized for the base. Otherwise the unit will run under-loaded and won't pay back.
