Feasibility study for the implementation and operation of a cogeneration plant based on the DvG1A-500 gas engine-generator manufactured by TDV "Pervomaiskdieselmash" as of July 25, 2019 (operation in cogeneration mode all year round)

Initial data:

Total electrical output of the cogeneration unit (taking into account the power utilization factor – 0.9) – 500 kW × 0.9 = 450 kWh.

Electricity generation: 8,000 h × 450 kW/h = 3,600.00 thousand kWh/year,

where 8,000 h is the average annual operating hours of the CHP unit.

Thermal output of the CHP unit – 720 kW × 0.9 = 648 kW × 0.86/1000 = 0.557 Gcal/h.

Heat generation: 0.557 × 8,000 = 4,464 Gcal/year.

Fuel – natural gas with a calorific value of 8,000 kcal/m³.

Gas price – UAH 7.37 per Nm³ including VAT.

Annual fuel consumption for the CHP unit – 150 Nm³/h × 0.9 × 8,000 = 1,080.00 thousand Nm³/year.

ANNUAL EXPENSES:
It is planned that the generated electricity will be used mainly for the company’s own needs, i.e., the enterprise will save on purchasing electricity from “Oblenergo,” the price of which as of July 25, 2019 is UAH 2.83 per kWh including VAT.
In this case, the enterprise will save:
3,600.00 thousand kWh × UAH 2.83/kWh = UAH 10,188.00 thousand including VAT.
The thermal energy will also be used for the company’s own needs. In this case, the enterprise will save the funds that would otherwise be spent to obtain the same amount of thermal energy using other equipment (gas boilers, electric devices, etc.).
As of July 25, 2019, the cost of 1 Gcal of thermal energy at the enterprise is UAH 1,182.00 including VAT, determined as:
145 m³ × 7.37 + 40 kW × 2.83 = UAH 1,182.00, where:
– 145 m³ is the average amount of natural gas required to obtain 1 Gcal of thermal energy in a gas boiler,
– 7.37 UAH is the price of 1 m³ of natural gas,
– 40 kW is additional electrical energy (pump drive, other electrical equipment) required to obtain 1 Gcal of thermal energy,
PAYBACK PERIOD FOR CHP IMPLEMENTATION:
The approximate cost of implementing a CHP unit based on the DvG1A-500 gas engine-generator, including design, construction and installation, commissioning, and putting the equipment into operation (“turnkey”), as of July 25, 2019, is about UAH 10 million including VAT.
The payback period for CHP implementation is:
10,000.00 thousand UAH / 5,693.85 thousand UAH = 1.76 years
Cost of thermal energy produced by the CHP:
648 kW / (648 kW + 450 kW) × 9,770.60 thousand UAH / 4,464 Gcal/year = 0.59 × 2,188.75 = 1,291.36 UAH/Gcal
Cost of electric energy produced by the CHP:
(9,770.60 thousand UAH – (4,464 Gcal/year × 1,291.36 UAH/Gcal)) / 3,600.00 thousand kWh/year = 1.11 UAH/kWh
